"William became a member of the Ancient and Honorable Artillery in Boston in 1666. He became ruined in morals by serving in the army of England. He was of a roving disposition and spent much of his time in passing to and from the West Indies. His wife, displeased at his neglect, petitioned the court of assistants for a divorce in 1674. On October 1 of that year the court passed the following decree: Elizabeth Sedgwick is divorced from her husband upon her application, provided he does not return by the first of January next."
