Catfish Island is advertised in 1806 as containingnearly five acres, with the "privilege reserved by John and HenryPawling to fish in the pool above and to draw out the net on itsshore." In the spring of 1811 upwards of five barrels of shad werecaught and salted down at the poor-house for the use of the papers, as we learn from the directors' report for said year. William Bakewell, in offering his farm of two hundred acres for sale in 1813 at Fatland Ford, does not omit mentioning its "shad fishery.").

234 (This stone church building stood across the road from the present church, in the current cemetery, which was then the churchyard. A marker, placed in 1913, commemorates the stone church's site. Several artifacts from the 1721 building, including its cornerstone, survive today. After it was demolished, the stones from the older structure were used in the walls of Saint James' current church building. During the Revolutionary War, George Washington held a war council in the Outreach House's study. The church was also used as a hospital during the revolutionary war.).

My Bruners also came from somewhere in Pennsylvania. My 5x great-grandfather is believed to be an Adam Bruner, who had children born in the second half of the 1700's (Susannah, George, Adam and Henry). These children with their widowed mother came to Canada somewhere around 1800 or before and settled in Essex County, the first Bruners to the area and starting a large tree of descendants. Adam, the father, is said to have been a Revolutionary War Vet, killed by indians, either while still in Pennsylvania or on the family's way to Canada. The family of course spent some til on Grosse Ile as was the norm back then. Anyone who may be further interested in this family, or knows how I may be able to obtain early PA records, please feel free to contact me. Thanks.
