• Surname History. 496 The surname Vogt signifies an official position of ancient Teutonic origin and a common name on ancient records in various municipalities and provinces of the Kingdom of Saxony, Germany. This last name appears in documents as Voigt, Voit, and also Vod and Fouth. While the format of their spelling is different, we all carried the same meaning of security or protector, which was a carry over from the old Langobard law. According to Langobard law, any individual occupying a position as Vogt was regarded as being of distinct importance. For example, a land-Vogt was an administrator of real estate; a Stadt-Vogt was an official similar to a city judge; a Schirm-Vogt, meant that we were head of a monastery. In Midievil times the title of Vogt was similar to that of a count in England.

The early ancestors of the Vogt family lived in the region of Saxe-Weimar as early as the fourteenth century. A few Vogt that are included in historical documents are:

Christoph Vogt, who was a brougomeister in the city of Zittau in 1512
Daniel Vogt, was a doctor of medicine, and for a number of years held the office of superintendent at Hessen, in the province of Saxony, from 1668 to 1675.
Michael Christophson Vogt was born in the town of buckeburg in the principality of Schaumburg-Lippe, July 4, 1680. In 1696 he entered the high school at Rinteln, and in 1699 he is referred to as having gone to Oldenberg, where he held a position as governor to the young nobleman, Johann Heinrich von Engels.
Franz Ernst Vogt entered the army as an auditeur under Colonel Von Wedel in 1700. In 1703 he held the official position of Riscal to the County Friedrich Cristian of Schaumber-Lippe and in 1705 he was one of the judiciary for the town of Buckeburg
Gabriel Vogt, who in 1668, served as Chur-Sachsicher Hof and Berg Rath.
George Vogt, who was a celebrated organ builder in my day, and is accredited with having built the noted organ in the church at Mark Ranstadt.
