The Brubacher's can be found in Switzerland as early as the 15th century in the vicinity of Horgen and Wadenswil. The initial form of the surname was Bruggbacher which became Bruppacher and finally Brubaker. At the time this surname was adopted there lived a prominent person, in an imposing mansion near a bridge that spanned a wild mountain stream or brook, near Zolliker, on the right side of the lake of Zurich. It was he who combined the bruck or brugg, meaning bridge and bach meaning stream or brook
